Addition of two small integers can be made easily both using simple slide rule and number line. How do you sum up 501 + (-133)? Of course, slide rule and number line will no more help you in working on those numbers. Now, therefore, you should be able to add up both number without the Auxiliaries.
1. If both numbers have similar sign, add both numbers and give the result same sign as those of the two numbers
Example
a. 305 + 122 = 427
b. -36 + (-54) = -(36+54)= -90
2. If the two numbers have opposite signs, without considering the signs, substract greater number with smaller one. Then, give sign according to the greater number. In case both numbers are same, the result is zero
Example
a. 47 + (-87) = -(87-47) = -40
b. 89 + (-45) = ( 89-45) = 44
